Tying Knots for Adjustable Necklaces & Bracelets

In these instructions, we’ll explain how to tie two different types of knots to make an adjustable necklace or bracelet. You decide which you prefer.

Neither of these knots is really complicated. The first one we’ll show you we call the “Easy Slider”. It is super-simple, might take you a minute to do it. The second one we call the “Fancy Slider”. And, although it’s not really particularly fancy, it will require a little more effort and could take three or four tries until you’re happy with the results.

The key to tying functional and attractive knots is to follow the pictures closely and to keep the turns of the cord tight without being too tight. A little practice and you’ll learn the difference.

In the end, if the knot is too loose, it will come apart or just won’t stay in place and hold the adjustment you give it. The solution is to untie, dampen the cord, smooth out the kinks, then retie it a bit tighter.

On the other hand, if a knot is too tight, it will not slide readily or at all. As a result, you won’t be able to adjust the necklace or bracelet. The solution is to let the leather dry, if is damp, then try gently working with the knot to get it to slide.

Sometimes putting a bit of olive or leather oil on the cord near the knot will help. If reasonable, gentle effort still won’t coax the knot into sliding, then untie the knot, dampen the cord, smooth out the kinks, and retie it a bit looser.

Whatever you do, keep in mind that these leather cords are not ships’ hawsers! If you try to force a knot to move, you may actually break the cord! Better retie than have to kick yourself for ruining the cord.

As alluded to above, if you have to re-tie a knot, the cord end[s] will probably be kinky or curly. Before attempting to retie the cord, you should get out the kinks and curls. Doing this is easy. Just dampen the ends in regular tap water. Don’t soak. Then gently smooth out the kinks in the cord with your fingertips. That’s all there is to it. See illustrations below:

Before Dampening

After Dampening

If the leather cord is slightly damp while you are tying, so much the better. You’ll find it easier to keep the turns in your knots tight and compact.

A word about the illustrations that follow: In many of the pictures you will notice one or two small steel rods. You won’t need any such rod for tying the knots. We only used these to get our fingers out of the way so you could see the progress of the knot.
